Declaración de solidaridad: por el fin de la impunidad y por la justicia para el pueblo de Honduras.
Seguimos de cerca el juicio por el asesinato de Berta Cáceres, líder del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas en Honduras (COPINH), que se realiza del 10 al 28 de septiembre. Un escuadrón de la muerte la asesinó el 2 de marzo de 2016 en su casa e hirió a Gustavo Castro, miembro de Amigos de la Tierra – México.
Berta fue una de nosotros. Luchó por el derecho a la autodeterminación de su pueblo, los Lencas, y en contra de la destrucción y colonización de sus tierras y recursos naturales.
Berta Cáceres se mantuvo firme y sin temor junto con el pueblo Lenca y el COPINH para luchar contra el megaproyecto de la hidroeléctrica Agua Zarca, prevista en el río Gualcarque, un lugar sagrado para las comunidades indígenas y vital para su supervivencia. La Corporación Hondureña para el Desarrollo Energético (DESA), que está construyendo el proyecto, y el gobierno hondureño han respondido a la lucha popular con el incremento de la represión y persecución a los/as defensores/as de los derechos humanos. Sin embargo, el asesinato de Berta Cáceres solo ha intensificado la lucha.
Estamos conectados con el juicio por el asesinato de Berta porque Israel ha contribuido históricamente a la represión contra los movimientos sociales y políticos en Honduras. Israel ha ofrecido armas y entrenamiento para la represión a partir de los años 80, incluido el apoyo a “los contras” con base en Honduras. Hoy el presidente Juan Orlando Hérnandez (JOH) se enorgullece de ser un aliado cercano de Israel. En agosto de 2016, JOH firmó un acuerdo militar con Israel que apunta a fortalecer las fuerzas armadas, la Oficina Nacional de Investigación e Inteligencia y la creación de un proyecto de ciberseguridad.
El armamento y las técnicas de represión que Israel exporta a Honduras han sido probadas y utilizadas sobre los palestinos como parte del régimen de apartheid, colonialismo y ocupación de Israel. Los drones que Honduras compró a Israel el año pasado con fines de vigilancia han sido desarrollados y utilizados especialmente contra la población palestina en Gaza para imponer un asedio abrupto y repetidas masacres.
Como dijo la hija de Berta, Berta Zúñiga, no solo queremos justicia para Berta, junto con el COPINH y el pueblo de Honduras creemos que el juicio debe ser un paso para poner fin a la impunidad de los perpetradores y todos los cómplices.
Estamos siguiendo el juicio por el asesinato de Berta y denunciamos que, entre otras irregularidades, el Ministerio Público por más de dos años ha persistido en obstaculizar y ocultar información que viola los derechos de las víctimas.
Además, los ocho ex empleados de DESA y el personal militar actualmente bajo juicio no son los únicos responsables. Toda la cadena de complicidad debe deshacerse. DESA efectivamente ha constituido parte de una estructura criminal, los bancos que han financiado el proyecto conociendo sus implicaciones y el gobierno de Honduras han brindado total apoyo al proyecto y a la represión de los defensores de los derechos humanos. Todos aquellos que planearon, ordenaron y contribuyeron al asesinato de Berta deben rendir cuentas.
Finalmente, debemos trabajar juntos para evitar que Israel exporte su experiencia en represión para dañar a las personas alrededor del mundo.
Ya sea en Honduras, en Palestina o en cualquier otro lugar del mundo: tenemos que solidarizarnos para poner fin a la represión estatal y vencer la avaricia corporativa que se beneficia de las violaciones de nuestros derechos.
La verdadera justicia tiene que ser construida por la gente.

Solidarity statement: For an end to impunity and for justice to the people of Honduras
We are following closely the trial of the murder of Berta Cáceres, leader of the Civil Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations in Honduras (COPINH), being held from September 10-28. A death squad assassinated her on March 2, 2016 in her home and wounded Gustavo Castro, member of Friends of the Earth Mexico.
Berta was one of us. She fought for the right to self-determination of her people, the Lenca, and against the destruction and colonization of their land and natural resources
Berta Cáceres stood steadfast and without fear together with the Lenca people and the COPINH to fight the megaproject of the Agua Zarca dam, planned on the Gualcarque River, a sacred place for the indigenous communities and vital for their survival. The Honduran Corporation for Energetic Development DESA – which is building the project – and the Honduran government have responded to the popular struggle with increasing repression and persecution of human rights defenders. Yet, the murder of Berta Cáceres has only intensified the struggle.
We are connected to the trial of Berta’s murder because Israel has historically contributed to repression against social and political movements in Honduras. Israel has offered arms and training for repression starting in the 80s, including support for the Contras based in Honduras. Today president Juan Orlando Hérnandez (JOH) prides himself as being a close ally of Israel. In August 2016, JOH signed a military agreement with Israel that aims to strengthen the armed forces, the National Bureau of Investigation and Intelligence and the creation of a cybersecurity project.
The weaponry and the techniques of repression that Israel exports to Honduras have been tested and used on Palestinians as part of Israel’s regime of apartheid, colonialism and occupation. The drones that Honduras bought from Israel last year for surveillance purposes have been developed and used especially against the Palestinian population in Gaza to enforce abrutal siege and repeated massacres.
As Berta’s daughter, Berta Zuñiga, said, we don’t only want justice for Berta, together with the COPINH and the people of Honduras we believe that the trial must be a step to end impunity of the perpetrators and all those complicit.
We are following the trial on Berta’s murder and denounce that, among other irregularities, the Public Ministry for more than two years has persisted in hindering and hiding information violating the rights of victims.
Further, the eight ex-employees of DESA and military personnel currently under trial are not the only ones responsible. The entire chain of complicity must be undone. DESA has effectively constituted part of a criminal structure, banks have financed the project knowing its implications and the government of Honduras has given full support to the project and to the repression of the human rights defenders. All those that have planned, ordered and contributed to Berta’s assassination have to be held accountable.
Finally, we must work together to stop Israel from exporting its expertise in repression to harm people across the globe.
Whether in Honduras, in Palestine or anywhere else in the world: we have to stand in solidarity to end state repression and defeat corporate greed that profits from the violations of our rights.
True justice has to be built by the people.
