PRESS RELEASE 9/2025 Information Leaked About Security Measures for COPINH and Berta Cáceres’ Family 

COPINH denounces and condemns the publication of confidential information about security measures granted to our organization and the family of Berta Cáceres on social media.

In a new wave of hate and persecution, confidential information about the collective precautionary measures granted to COPINH and the family of Berta Cáceres has been leaked, exposing details from the National Protection Mechanism. This is not an isolated incident: it demonstrates direct monitoring, internal access to protected files, and a coordinated plan of intimidation.

In addition to spreading false and defamatory messages, recent social media posts, including images, have disclosed information about a protection vehicle assigned to Berta Cáceres’ family by the National Protection Mechanism, as well as sensitive case file information that details protection measures of both COPINH and the Cáceres family.

This constitutes a serious and deliberate violation of the confidentiality of security measures, which directly compromises the life and integrity of the beneficiaries. These events are unfolding in the broader context of ongoing demands for justice for Berta Cáceres, the work of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) in Honduras, and Daniel Atala’s flight from justice for his involvement in the crime against Berta. 

This information could only have been disclosed through direct access to official files of the National Protection Mechanism or the company that rented the vehicle, which indicates an institutional leak that must be investigated immediately.

This action cannot be seen as an isolated incident or an irresponsible act of misinformation. It is part of a sustained campaign of attacks, surveillance, defamation, and threats against COPINH and the family of Berta Cáceres. It is an implicit threat aimed at intimidating, obstructing, and stopping our fight for justice.

WE DEMAND:

• An immediate and transparent investigation into the leak of this confidential information.
• The State of Honduras, through the National Protection Mechanism, guarantee effective protection for all beneficiaries of precautionary measures.
  

COPINH and the family of Berta Cáceres hold the State of Honduras fully responsible for any attack or harm that may result from this serious breach of security.

Our struggle for justice for Berta Cáceres will not stop.
We will not be silenced by fear or impunity.
