ALERTA!

Detention of International Human Rights Observation Delegation headed to Río Blanco!

A few minutes ago a delegation of International Human Rights Observers was detained at a road block at the community of Santa Ana, jurisdiction of Zacapa, Santa Barbará, by employees of the DESA company, 4 members of the council of Santa Ana, in complicity with the National Police, the Army and with the Mayor of the Municipality of Zacapa; That delegation is headed to Río Blanco in order to learn more about the grave situation of violations and criminalization against the communities of Río Blanco and COPINH as a result of the Agua Zarca Hydroelectric Project/DESA. This delegation is made up of 20 Canadian and U.S. citizens belonging to several internationally-known organizations such as the School of the Americas Watch, U.S./El Salvador Sister Cities, Canadian journalists and other organizations. The lackeys have threatened them that if they go they won’t let them through on their way back and they won’t make it out.

We call on national and international solidarity and human rights organizations to denounce this and demand respect for the right to freedom of movement, to the right of the Lenca People to maintain relationships with solidarity and human rights organizations, with national and international journalists, and with commissions from COPINH. We condemn this unacceptable paramilitary along with the fact that they are impeding the only bus to which the sisters and brothers of Río Blanco have Access in order to move around.

The aforementioned is part of the repressive policies against COPINH and Río Blanco, which has become sharper over the last four weeks with more repression, more militarization and intimidation by the DESA company using the so-called “Operation Freedom” and that it is intensifying as the elections approach and demonstrates the level of defenselessness of the communities.

We call for solidarity to not cease to accompany Río Blanco and the Honduran people and in fact to redouble efforts to guarantee respect for the human rights of the Lenca people and the Honduran people in general.
